The central focus of this module is how languages are learned. In the field of language acquisition a distinction is often drawn between the acquisition of a first language (the mother tongue) and the learning of a second language. From the title of the module, Second Language Acquisition, it is clear that more attention will be given to how second languages are learned. However, first language acquisition is not entirely irrelevant here either. In order to gain a fuller appreciation of how the learning of a second language takes place, from time to time we will need to compare it with first language acquisition.
The central focus of this module is language learning and development as a field of crucial importance. The module attempts to investigate and describe the mental processes involved in the acquisition, production and comprehension of language. Through
discussion and analysis of theoretical issues, students will be exposed to the latest research rends and directions in the area of language learning and development.
If you're concerned that the length of the name of this module, makes it sound difficult you needn't worry, it isn't. However, you need to be aware that this is a Skills based module rather than content based, which means that you will be expected to work just as hard as your lecturers to successfully complete it.

This module also aims to develop self-confidence through self-management, work and academic skills and to further strengthen your reading, comprehension and writing skills in the English Language.

The course will also focus on the lexical and grammatical changes in the history of English from the earliest times to the present day. The major topics are the synthetic-analytic shift, the history of English pronouns, the evolution of the verb phrase, the role of language contact in the development of the English lexicon, and the emergence of prose-styles in Early Modern English form.
Introduction:
This module is meant to acquaint and familiarize non-Arabic speaking students with the characteristics of contemporary Omani / Arab culture and civilization. In addition, it sheds lights on the values of Arab communities and the need to uphold and adhere to these values. During the course, students will be taught about various types of issues ranging from history, geography, tourism, and the culture of Oman. It also aims at enhancing and extending the knowledge of students about the importance of harmony, cooperation and tolerance among cultures.

This module aims to enable student to consolidate and extend English language proficiency and communication skills (particularly listening and speaking) in workplace and professional settings. Students would be able to express their own ideas, feelings and thoughts clearly, and respond to others appropriately, in a range of formal and informal situations in business contexts.Additionally, the module prepares students to communicate effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
David Wilkins (1972) states that, ‘‘There is not much value in being able to produce grammatical sentences if one has not got the vocabulary that is needed to convey what one wishes to say … While without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed’’. This module will help you not only in understanding the different aspects of ‘knowing a word’ and building your vocabulary but also use vocabulary effectively both inside and outside the classroom.
