  • Event 1 : BUILD A PC

    • Objectives

       This competition aims to:

       Intensify the interest and appreciation of students in further improving their skills in computer assembly and the handling of electronic systems;

      Inspire students towards full development of their potentials in enhancing their skills. 

      The Competition

       The competition is designed for students to display skills in PC assembly with great precision and speed. Students will demonstrate their ability to put together a PC using the right tool(s) until it has started to successfully boot. A maximum of sixty minutes is allocated for each participant and the winner will be decided based on the points given by the judges using the scoring criteria.

      Terms and Conditions

      1. The competition will be done in groups. Each group will have two (2) participants. A maximum time of sixty (60) minutes is allocated per group to assemble the PC. Anyone in the batch who exceeds the time limit will automatically be disqualified from the competition.

        

      1. If the participant feels a component is not working he/she can choose another one which is provided in the desk.

          

      1. The event manager will signal the start and press the timing device.

        

      1. The participants will proceed to their individual work space to start the actual assembly.

        

       

      1. Jolting, banging or mishandling of any of the PC part are strictly not allowed and will lead to disqualification.

        

      1. After the assembly, the participant must ensure that the casing is in place and all screws are tightened before turning on the power.

       

      1. The participant may declare their completion upon system start up (POST) audio is heard and display is seen in the monitor.

       

        

      1. Judging of the PC units will be done when all are finished with the assembly.

        

      1. In case of a tie, the competitors will compete against each other for a tie-breaker round decided by the judges.

        

      1. The decision of the judge is final and irrevocable.

  • EVENT 2: BUILD A NETWORK

    • Objectives

       This competition aims to:

      1.  Provide students with hands on experience in building a small local area network by using appropriate networking media and equipment.
      2. Enable students to share resources within a local area network environment.

       

       The Competition

      The competition includes 2 participants per group .It is designed for students to display skills in building a network within the time frame [60 minutes] provided. Students will demonstrate their ability to create a straight through cable, connect PC‘s to a switch ,assign appropriate IP addresses through PC’s and test successful connection between the PC’s. Maximum of sixty minutes is allocated for each group and the winner will be decided based on the points given by the judges using the scoring criteria.

        

      Potential Participants

      Students currently registered in level 2 of Faculty of IT are eligible to join this competition. Two members are allowed in a group. 10 Groups are allowed in the competition.

       

      Requirements

      Each group will be provided with the following:

      • One (1) Switch
      • Two (2) Desktop Computers
      • One (1) Crimping Tool
      • One (1) UTP Cable Tester
      • Two (2) Unshielded Twisted Pair Cables
      • Six (6)  RJ 45 connectors.

       

       Terms and Conditions

      1.  Event manager must ensure that all participants are properly oriented an hour before the competition.
      2. The competition will be done in groups. Each group will have two (2) participants. A maximum time of sixty (60) minutes is allocated per group to establish a Local Area Network. Anyone in the batch who exceeds the time limit will automatically be disqualified from the competition.
      3. The event manager will signal the start and press the timing device.
      4. The participants will proceed to their work space to start the network setup.
      5. Jolting, banging or mishandling of any of the networking tools/equipment are not allowed and will lead to disqualification.
      6. After completing the network setup and configuration, the participants should ensure that the resources can be shared successfully.
      7. Judging of the networks will be done after the allocated competition time.
      8. The 1st and, 2nd place winners are determined based on the scores provided by the judges. In case of a tie, the competitors will compete against each other for a tie-breaker round decided by the judges.
      9. The decision of the judge is final and irrevocable. 
  • Event 3: POSTER

    The competition:

    The students have to present their ideas through overall designs, texts and illustrations. A hard copy of the designed poster must be available for the event. The poster size must not exceed the given size.

    Potential Participants

    This event is open for all the students across the faculties, including the foundation students. The students must form a team of two (one team will have 2 participants) in order to participate in this event. 

    THEMES FOR THE POSTER:

    •  Transformation in Oman:  Analog to Digital – Comparing Old and New Technology
    • Emerging technologies in  IT
    • Recycling:  “e-waste”
    • Virtual reality
    • eOman : The future
    • Social Networking  : Advantages and Disadvantages

    TERMS & CONDITIONS

    • You may choose a theme from the above list.
    • The poster must be A1 size (24” × 36”) and not to be exceeded.
    •  Posters must be printed.
    •  Include creative elements in the poster.
    •  Information should have a logical flow.
    •  The contents must be clear.
    •  There must be consistency in the colors and the font sizes.
    •   The title banner must contain the title of the work.
    • Do not include the author’s name in the poster.
    • Submit the hard copy of the poster on the previous day (24th APRIL 2016) of the event before 4:00 PM.
    •  Do not use offensive languages in your poster.

  • EVENT 4-WEB DESIGN

    Aim and Objectives

     The Web Design Competition helps in empowering the creative &technically proficient web savvy minds. It provides a platform to showcase creative abilities via the power of the internet.

    The objective is to

    • To enhance creativity and web designing skills.
    • Inspire students towards full development of their potentials in enhancing their skills. 

    The Completion Scenario

     Advances in technology are quickly paving the way for smart cities. A smart city is an urban center that harnesses technologies, such as IT, to improve the quality of life of residents, manage available resources such as roads and water in economically sustainable manner, and reduce environmental pollution.

     The participants of the completion has to design a web page on the topic

    Muscat Smart city through eTransformation

      

    Potential Participants

     Students currently registered in level 2 and level 3 are eligible to join this competition. Two members are allowed in a group. 10 Groups are allowed in the competition.

    General Guidelines and Rules: 

    • Students have to design a web-page on the specified topic provided.
    • The groups should bring the required material for the web design (Text, images, audio, video, animations  etc)
    • Lab equipped with Visual Studio.NET 2013, notepad++ will be provided. 
    • A maximum time of sixty (60) minutes is allocated for the competition
    • Memory stick having the above material for the competition should be submitted to Lizwin/Suad in Room No 216 on 24th April, 2016
    • Judgement will be done based on Content,Aesthetics and Design
    • The decision of the judge is final and irrevocable. 
  • EVENT 5: FIX THE BUG

    • EVENT 5: Bug Fix Competition

      Objectives:

      This competition aims to:

       Encourage students to gain hands on experience in developing spontaneous solution by showcasing their problem solving skills through programming on a given complex programme code either in Visual C++ or Java.

       Inspire students towards full development of their potentials in enhancing their logical and programming skills through bug fixing.

       The Completion

      The students will get opportunity to display skills in problem solving/logic through bug fixing using programming skills with great precision and speed. They will demonstrate their ability to fix the bugs in the given program. A maximum of thirty minutes is allocated for each group and the winner will be decided based on the points given by the judges using the scoring criteria.

       

      Potential Participants

      Two members are allowed in a group. 10 Groups are allowed in each of the competition.

       

      ü  For C++ Program Coding Competition:

      Students currently registered in Level 1 and Level 2 of Faculty of IT are eligible to form a group for C++ program coding competition

      ü  For Java Program Coding Competition:

      Students currently registered in Level 2 and Level 3 to form group and join java program competition.

      Requirements

      The groups participating in C++ bug fix competition will be provided with Visual Studio 2013 and the groups participating in Java bug fix competition will be provided Eclipse software. Competitors need to know how to fix the bugs and compile/execute in the program with time constraint.

  • EVENT 6: ACL CHALLENGE

    Objectives

    • Investigate the given network configuration.
    • Evaluate a network policy and plan an ACL implementation.
    • Configure numbered extended ACLs.

    Introduction

    Extended ACLs are router configuration scripts that control whether a router permits or denies packets based on their source or destination address as well as protocols or ports. Extended ACLs provide more flexibility and granularity than standard ACLs. This activity focuses on defining filtering criteria, configuring extended ACLs, applying ACLs to router interfaces, and verifying and testing the ACL implementation.

    The Competition

    The competition includes 2 participant per group. It is designed for students to display network security skills by planning and applying rules for ACL implementation in a given scenario.

    Terms and Conditions

    1. The competition will be done in groups. Each group will have two (2) participants.
    2. The group who completes the task first with correct configuration will be declared as the WINNER of the event.
    3. Maximum time to complete the task is 1 (one) hour (60 minutes), if no group completes the task within time allotted, the group with most (correct) configurations will be declared as WINNER.
    4. The event manager will signal the start and press the timing device.
    5. Discussion and/or carrying any material (such as book, laptop, USB) from outside is not allowed and will lead to disqualification.
    6. Use of Mobile phones during the event is not permitted and it may lead to disqualification.
    7. The Event will be conducted in restricted environment having no access to internet.
    8. After completing the participants should ensure that the activity file is saved and stored in the network (W:\) drive.
    9. Judging of the networks will be done after the allocated competition time.
    10. The 1st and, 2nd place winners are determined based on the scores provided by the judges.
    11. The decision of the judge is final and irrevocable.
