This module introduces the study of language and society. It explores how language is actually used, how people feel about it, how the two are often opposed, and how the structure of language interacts with both.
The module strives to provide you with necessary translation skills and knowledge. It attempts to expose you to the importance of text analysis, the linguistic differences between different language levels and the importance of dictionary use skills in the translation process.
This course is about how to study meaning in language. There are two ways that meaning can be studied: one is meaning in the language system and the other is meaning created by the speaker and the hearer, i.e. the users of a language. Semantics deals with the first one whereas pragmatics deals with the second one.
