What are badges?

A digital badge is an online graphical representation of a skill you’ve earned. A badge is a symbol or indicator of an accomplishment, skill, competency, or interest. Badges can be used to represent achievements, communicate successes, and set goals.

Advantages of badges.

1. It can signal achievement to peers and employers
2. Supports extracurriculars
3. Provides a complete picture of the learner
4. It can be shared and taken on a global level

Authenticity of badges.

The information behind each badge provides justification and validation, including:

1. The issuer of the badge and their contact details
2. How the badge was earned (Name, description, module, criteria)
3. Links back to documents, or testimonials demonstrating the work that lead to earning the badge.

Sharing badges globally.

Mozilla backpack (http://backpack.openbadges.org/) can be used to share all MOVE badges online. Backpack can be easily integrated into our e-Learning system. Badges can be shared via Backpack on Facebook, Twitter etc. Students can view their friend's badges on their profile pages on MOVE.

Types of badges.

Badges could be manually awarded or automatically awarded. Manual badges are awarded by the lecturer after manually (physical, live) evaluating the students performance. Automated badges are awarded by MOVE based on different criteria. There are badges which stay forever and some expire after a certain period of time.

Badges are wonderful to earn and explore more. It motivates us, and the best part is the fact that we can share it with potential employers via Mozilla Backpack. Ask your lecturers to use badges in your e-learning module, it's easy and simple.
